Open shop

Open shop is the heart of the place. You bring a bike, we give you a stand and every tool you need, and a volunteer mechanic works the floor answering questions. You are not renting a garage — you are getting taught, at whatever pace you need.

Stands are first come, first served.

You do the work; we make sure you do it right.

What it costs

Everything below is a suggested price on a sliding scale. Pay the full amount if you can, pay what you can if you cannot, and pay a little extra if you are feeling generous — that is what funds the people who cannot. Nobody is turned away for lack of funds. You do not have to explain yourself, and no volunteer will ask.

Things we cannot do

Being straight about this saves everyone a trip:

  • Suspension and hydraulic brake internals. We do not have the bleed kits or the tools.
  • E-bike batteries and motors. Mechanical parts can be repaired here in so far as they are standard bike parts — brakes, drivetrain, wheels — but the electrical system has to go to a dealer.
  • Frame alignment, facing, and threading. No frame jig, no facing tools.
  • Same-day repairs. If you need it tomorrow, open shop is your fastest route, because you will be the one doing it.

Bike sales

We sell bikes we have refurbished from donations. They are cleaned, fully serviced, safety checked, and test ridden before they go on the floor. Every sale includes a free 30-day follow-up adjustment, because cables stretch and that is nobody's fault.

Rules of the floor

Short version: everyone here is a volunteer or a neighbor. Tools go back in their places. Close-toed shoes. Ask before you use something you have not used before. Harassment of any kind gets you asked to leave, the first time, without a discussion.

Come use a stand

Open shop runs once a week. Turn up with your bike and tell whoever is on shift that it is your first time.
